Mnemonic Series No.11: Major Depression

Major Depression Criteria
DEAD SWAMP

D - Depressed mood most of the day

E - Energy loss or Fatigue

A - Anhedonia

D - Death thoughts (recurrent), suicidal ideation

S - Sleep disturbances (insomnia, hypersomnia)

W - Worthlessness (excessive guilt)

A - Appetite or weight change

M - Mentation decrease (ability to think or concentrate)

P - Psychomotor agitation or retardation

Anhedonia is an inability to experience pleasure from normally pleasurable life events such as eating, excercise, and social or sexual interaction. Risk of suicide is high when patient is not in depress state. So watch out for any signs of suicide attempts during this period. Major depression is one of the common topics in NCLEX-RN.
